Training Guide: 10 questions to ask before you enroll in any program
Short programs can change your life or waste your money. Use this checklist to tell the difference before you sign.
This is preview content for The Skilled Nation, ahead of Issue 1 on February 4, 2027.
Quick take
- Ask for completion and job placement rates in writing.
- Get the full cost, including tools, books, and exam fees.
- Ask whether the program is Workforce Pell eligible.
Certificate enrollment rose 6.6% in fall 2025, according to the National Student Clearinghouse. More choices mean more good programs, and more weak ones. Ask these 10 questions before you enroll anywhere.
The checklist
- What credential do I earn? Get the exact name. Is it an industry certification, a state license prep, or a school certificate?
- Do employers in my area hire graduates? Ask for the names of three employers who hired graduates last year.
- What percent of students finish? Ask for the completion rate for the last two cohorts.
- What percent get a job in the field? Ask for the job placement rate, and how the school measures it.
- What do graduates earn? Ask for typical starting pay, not the best case.
- What is the full cost? Tuition plus tools, books, uniforms, testing, and licensing fees.
- Is it Workforce Pell eligible? Since July 1, 2026, Pell Grants can pay for eligible programs as short as 8 weeks. See our explainer.
- Does it count toward more? Ask whether credits stack toward a longer certificate, an associate degree, or an apprenticeship.
- What is the schedule? Days, nights, weekends, online, or in person. Can you keep working while you train?
- What support do you offer? Job placement help, tutoring, childcare, transportation, and tool loans all matter.
Red flags
- Pressure to sign today.
- No written numbers for completion, placement, or pay.
- Promises of guaranteed jobs or guaranteed pay.
- A cost that goes up after you enroll.
